Still Looking For A Reason To Raise Your Body’s Immune System

Tip! Learn to manage stress - Stress can actually be good for the immune system because it ‘kicks it in high gear.’ The stress that you experience during mild exercise is an example of good, short term stress.

Still need another reason to raise your body’s natural defense system? The drug that governments have stock piled as the first line of defense against the Avian flu has been linked to “abnormal behavior” like suicide.

Tamiflu has recently been linked to abnormal behavior. The flu drug’s maker warns of such potential problems as suicide. Just as recent as Monday, November 13, 2006, the maker of the antiviral medication Tamiflu issued a new warning for the flu drug saying patients must be closely monitored for potential psychiatric problems, including delirium and suicide. Isn’t that frieken scary?

Tip! Positive Thinking. Optimism can counteract the negative impact stress, tension and anxiety has on your immune system and well-being.

And our governments are stockpiling this stuff. For what, a massive suicide pandemic? Hoffman-La Roche Inc. had been discussing the matter with the Food and Drug Administration, which has been reviewing 103 cases in which patients reported bizarre behavior, usually within a day of taking Tamiflu. What’s terrifying is that most cases involved children under 17 and occurred in Japan. The cases include three people who fell to their deaths after taking the drug, including a 14-year-old boy who climbed atop the railing of his family’s condominium, an FDA memo says.

The memo also cites the case of an 8-year-old in Japan who took one dose of Tamiflu and, about an hour and a half later, tried to run out the front door of his home. The child would not answer to his name and was growling, according to the memo, which was prepared in advance of an FDA pediatric advisory committee meeting Thursday.

Dr. Debra Birnkrant, director of the FDA’s division of antiviral products, said it was not yet known if the abnormal behavior was caused by the drug or the flu, which can cause fever and delirium. But she added, “Since there were a number of cases over the last year that we looked at, we thought it would be the prudent thing to make the public aware.” No kidding!

Tip! Minimize alcohol and tobacco use - Excess alcohol and tobacco use decreases the effectiveness of the immune system in a number of ways. Alcohol interferes with nutrient absorption and immune system cell division, which can lead to an insufficient defense that leaves your body more susceptible to infection.

Another drug for seasonal flu, amantadine, has been associated with similar neurological side effects, mostly in the elderly, Birnkrant said. Hoffman-La Roche said in a statement that reports of psychiatric side effects from Tamiflu were rare. “While any relative contribution of Tamiflu to these events is unknown, Roche is committed to working closely with the FDA to ensure that the product label accurately reflects the reports,” it said.

The FDA’s memo says 24.5 million Tamiflu prescriptions were filled in Japan from 2001 to 2005. In the U.S., 6.5 million prescriptions were filled in the same period. Tamiflu is one of four treatments for seasonal flu in the U.S. It is usually taken to prevent or lessen the severity of the virus. Many governments, including that of the U.S., have stockpiled the drug to combat a possible outbreak of the H5N1 avian influenza virus. Although that mainly infects birds, there have been 153 human deaths worldwide since 2003, according to the World Health Organization.

Tip! Your skin is the first line of defense. Wearing gloves, and keeping chemicals off of your skin is a good first step in preserving your immune system.

But of course, you already know this. So why is it, that after writting a previous article where is was admitted that Tamiflu would probably not even work, and now these unbelievable side effects, would you even think twice about keeping your immune system at an all time high?

Tip! Stress has a direct effect on our immune systems.

Hard at Work: The Human Body’s Immune System

Tip! Exercise Exercise is a terrific way to boost your immune system, as well as help reduce the effect of stress. Particulary effective are: Strength training Moderate- to high-intensity cardio Yoga, Tai Chi, or similiar activities that focus on breathing, relaxation, and meditation.

The human body’s immune system is a complex system comprised, in essence, of two parts: the innate immune system and the adaptive immune system.

The role of the immune system, however, is simple. It creates barriers and maintains those barriers to prevent viruses and bacteria from entering the body. It strives to keep us healthy and free of infection.

However, it is not a perfect system and human’s do get sick. When infection strikes (pathogens enter the body), the innate immune system detects these pathogens. If the response is quick enough and efficient enough, often this “first strike team” can eliminate the infection before it turns into an even bigger one.

Tip! Positive Thinking. Optimism can counteract the negative impact stress, tension and anxiety has on your immune system and well-being.

Since the skin is the body’s first layer of defense, literally, it is by nature able to withstand much of the onslaught of germs within our environment. Inflammation (redness and swelling) is one of the first signs that the innate immune system has kicked in to prevent further infection. It’s actually a warning sign your body uses to alert you to a problem.

The one function the innate system does not have, however, is a “memory” of the infection. The “let’s remember what made us sick” function is the responsibility of the adaptive immune system. When the innate immune system’s response is not fully effective, the adaptive immune system comes into play. By identifying the invader, the adaptive system is, as the name implies, ready to make moves to block, isolate and learn from the invading pathogen. In this way, the human body “learns” and “adapts” to protect itself from future infection.

Tip! The acute stressors evoke our “fight or flight” response, and our immune system prepares itself for defense. The stressors force chemicals also into our system that boost the power of our immune systems.

Every winter the TV commercials and ads begin warning us of the upcoming cold and flu season. Hand washing is one of the best defenses you can do for your body. Proper hand washing is done with as much hot water as you can stand, lots of soap, scrubbing not only your hands but also your wrists and even up the arms. Follow this up with enough rinsing time (singing the Happy Birthday song in your head is a good measure of “proper length of time.”), and you’re more than halfway home to protecting yourself during the cold and flu season.

Tip! Eat an adequate amount of calories. The immune system must have an ample amount of calories.

Keeping healthy is an ongoing job. Plenty of sleep, the proper diet to ensure sufficient intake of vitamins and minerals, and exercise are the tasks humans are assigned (outwardly) to stay healthy. The skill and planning involved, however, to keep the body functioning properly remains hidden inside ourselves - the immune system - relentlessly working, untiring in its task.

Strong Immune System Prevents Cancer

Tip! Your skin is the first line of defense. Wearing gloves, and keeping chemicals off of your skin is a good first step in preserving your immune system.

Everyone has cancerous cells in our bodies. We depend on the immune system of our bodies to destroy these renegade cells before they get out of control and spread, leading to the development of cancer.

That is why it is important to keep our immune system strong. A diet high in fruits and vegetables provides a good supply of phytonutrient critical to enhance immunity and also provide many of the important vitamins and minerals to keep our immune systems working properly.

Laughter and feeling good are important to keep the immune system functioning well. Science has now found that every cell in the body has a receptor for the substances produced when we are happy. Every cell is therefore influenced by how we feel. Our first line of defense against any disease is adjusting our lifestyle to include things that make us happy and to lessen stress.

One important measure to take is to avoid consuming heat-damaged vegetable oils. Vegetable oils that are processed with the hydrogenation process, depress the immune system and create free radicals that can cause cancer.

Tip! Supplements Two supplements that have proven extremely helpful in boosting the immune system are omega-3 fish oil and Shaklee NutriFeron. Just be sure to purchase a high-quality fish oil, such as from Shaklee, Carlsons Labs, or …

Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms with an odd (unpaired) number of electrons. Once formed these highly reactive radicals can start a chain reaction, like dominoes. Their chief danger comes from the damage they can do when they react with important cellular components such as DNA, or the cell membrane. Cells may function poorly or become cancerous.

Our white blood cells have to deal with the viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungus that invade the body. When the white blood cells are over-worked fighting too many of these invaders, they may neglect their function of destroying renegade cells. Some renegade cells may get the chance to develop and spread, leading to the formation of cancer.

Tip! Positive Thinking. Optimism can counteract the negative impact stress, tension and anxiety has on your immune system and well-being.

Coconut oil has anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-parasitic and anti-fungal properties. Taking coconut oil regularly helps to kill a substantial amount of the viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungus in the body. This allows the white blood cells to search out and destroy renegade cells effectively.

Tip! Stress has a direct effect on our immune systems.

Coconut also acts as an anti-oxidant that prevents free radicals from damaging cells and causing cancer. Coconut oil is very stable chemically as it is saturated and has no double bonds. Thus coconut oil is not oxidized easily. It is so resistant to free radical attack that it acts as an anti-oxidant.
